An explosion proof tank is a system that integrates mechanical, electronic, chemical, and safety engineering. Its main explosion protection measures include:
1. Inhibit the formation of flammable environments
This is the most fundamental method of explosion prevention. If there is no combustible oil and gas-air mixture inside the tank, an explosion is not possible.
Internal Floating Roof Design:
- An additional floating disc is added inside the tank, which floats on the surface of the oil. This floating disc moves up and down with the liquid level, significantly reducing the contact area between the oil surface and air, thereby effectively inhibiting the volatilization of oil and gas, making it difficult for the concentration of oil and gas to reach the explosive limit.
- This is one of the most commonly used and effective explosion-proof measures at present.

Nitrogen Seal System:
- Inert gas (usually nitrogen) is filled into the gas phase space at the top of the tank (the space between the floating disc and the tank roof).
- Nitrogen dilutes and replaces the oxygen in the air, reducing the oxygen concentration to a level insufficient to support combustion (usually below 10-12%), fundamentally eliminating the possibility of an explosion.
Oil and Gas Recovery System:
- During the loading and unloading process, the oil and gas released from the explosion proof tank are collected and recovered as liquid oil through methods such as absorption, adsorption, or condensation, instead of being released into the atmosphere. This method is both safe and environmentally friendly.
2. Eliminate Ignition Sources
Even if a combustible environment is formed inside the tank, an explosion will not occur without an ignition source.
Anti-static Design:
· Electrostatic Grounding Wire: During loading and unloading of oil, ensure a good electrical connection between the tanker and the storage tank to conduct away static charges generated by liquid flow.
· Internal Components: Avoid sharp protrusions inside the tank to prevent localized charge accumulation.
· Floating Disc Seal: Use conductive materials to make the seal between the floating disc and the tank wall, preventing static sparks.

Explosion-Proof Electrical Equipment:
· All equipment in the tank area that may produce electrical sparks, such as pumps, level gauges, lighting fixtures, switches, etc., must be of 'explosion-proof' type.
· The casings of these equipment are specially designed to confine the internal electrical sparks or high temperatures within the casing, preventing them from igniting the external explosive environment.
Flame Arrestors:
· Installed on the breathing valve, vent ports, and other pipelines of storage tanks.
· Their interior is a special metal mesh or channel that can extinguish flames propagating from the pipeline, preventing external sources of fire from entering the tank, or flames from spreading from inside the tank to the outside.

Structural Safety and Pressure Relief Protection
In extreme cases, if an unexpected combustion or sudden pressure increase occurs, the storage tank needs to have the ability to protect itself and the surrounding environment.
● Corrosion Protection Design: The use of high-quality anti-corrosion coatings or linings prevents the tank wall from thinning and leaking due to corrosion.
● Emergency Pressure Relief Device: When the internal pressure of the tank abnormally rises, the relief valve or cover will automatically open to release the pressure, preventing a physical explosion (i.e., the tank being burst).
● Fireproof Insulation Layer: A fireproof material is installed outside the tank wall, which can maintain the strength of the tank for a certain period of time in case of an external fire, thus gaining time for extinguishing the fire.
